ARTIST PROFILE: Tierney Gearon

Tierney Gearon
United States (b. 1963)

Tierney Gearon is fine art documentary photographer known for her brutally honest and, at times, psychologically disturbing work.   Her series The Mother Project follows the everyday life of Gearon's eccentric mother.  I first saw this series in the Yossi Milo Gallery in New York, and I left the exhibition feeling both intrigued and a bit embarrassed.  Her photographs, none-the-less, are beautifully executed and never fail to provoke a good conversation.

(b. 1968)

Magnum photographer Alessandra Sanguinetti's work captures the intimacies of life in rural Argentina. Her series The Adventures of Guille and Belinda and the Enigmatic Meaning of Their Dreams follows the lives of two young cousins growing up their family’s farm outside Buenos Aires. Sanguinetti's photographs have a sad, poetic quality that I find very intriguing.

Falling somewhere between humor and quiet meditation, Sugimoto's photographs study the role artificiality plays in our everyday lives. While he documents places like New York City's Museum of Natural History, movie theaters, and wax museums, his photographs also poignantly illustrate the deceptive qualities inherent in the photographic medium itself.

"However fake the subject, once photographed, it's as good as real."
