Nicolai's photographs can be most easily described as documentary, however the poetics of his work delve much deeper than mere observation. He is most well-known for is series Boxer which depicts young, male boxers before and after fights. His photographs present the subjects much like scientific specimens, maintaining a standardization in both point of view and pose.
